The conclusion of this continuity story arc is the execution of a character who was once a paragon of all things that America was said to stand for. The analysis will seek to prove that the motives and underlying commentaries in comic books have changed over time from political justification and glorifying to a more critical approach to government and power structures, and a reflection of a complexity of public and political opinions and standpoints.

In order to research this proposition of a shift I will draw on the work and studies of a variety of academics and theorists such as Marc di Paolo, Jason Dittmer, and Robert G. As the basis for this dissertation, the character must be given some context for further study.

Due to his physical weakness he is repeatedly denied admission to the military, until eventually he is accepted into Operation Rebirth, an experimental military procedure. During this experiment Rogers is injected with a serum that imbues him with superhuman strength, agility, and endurance. During a mission to stop a runaway enemy bomber plane Captain America crashed into the Artic.

Due to his super-soldier serum he survived for decades, frozen in suspended animation. Eventually his body was found and revived, and Captain America became a leading member of the Avengers. A common theme since his revival has been his struggle to adapt to the world that he was frozen out of for decades, and the changes it has seen. Though comic books, particularly those involving superheroes, may appear to be simple fantasy or escapism one thing must be made clear, Comic books are, and for a long time have been, deeply political reflections of the times in which they are produced.

To validate this statement this dissertation will explore of one such comic book superhero, both his contemporary use and his origins. The man is for all intents and purposes a walking American flag.

This immediately parallels the man with the nation and ideology of America. He embodies it. As this project will be exploring the ideologies of America that Captain America is said to embody, it is first important to define these notions of American ideology and nationalism.

This oath of loyalty has become an American tradition and institution and within it we see the motives of American action, and ideology. What has been institutionally iterated to be an American political standpoint is that America stands for a global justice for all, but also fierce individualism and patriotism.

As the pledge would suggest the ideology is attached to the flag aka the nation and not necessarily to the government. In this way ideology and national identity are tied to the geopolitical nation itself. The fact that instead of a sword or gun Cap carries a shield is perhaps the feature that is most driven by underlying American political ideology. The set of values they traditionally defend is summed up by the Superman tag of Truth, Justice and the American Way.

Sometimes the last term has been interpreted in a narrowly nationalistic way…but far more often…. If Captain America is said to be representative of America itself, then so must these characteristics mentioned by Dittmer. The next item that will be analysed in this research Figure 1.

Captain America Comics 1 project is the first cover of the first Captain America comics, where the protagonist is seen punching Hitler. This is the first appearance of the character. Even during this attack on Hitler, Captain America carries his American flag adorned shield, importantly aligning Cap and his American nation with that of a defensive peacekeeper, and not an aggressor, a notion that will become increasingly relevant as the parallels in ideology between real world events and comic book chronology are displayed.

Beyond mere aesthetics of character his flag suit, and shield , Captain America from his very first appearance in Timely Comics which later became Marvel Comics Captain America Comics 1 March, was a vehicle for political and national ideology. See Fig. This act of aggression towards the German mirrors the American ideologies mentioned above on several levels. Firstly, most obviously, it represents a clear geopolitical drive from the writers and producers of the comic.

This symbolizes America embodied in the protagonist attacking the current at the time of release of the comic political leader of another state, and thus history is immediately evoked. This image in Figure 1 is not a standalone caricature or satire of common stereotype of an un- American other, or a postmodern appropriation of image, it is an image that is present because this comic was produced in a year that World War 2 was unfolding.

There is a direct chronological parallel between the events of this American comic book superhero and real world events of the time, WWII. Captain America here acts as a metonym of American ideology, reflecting the beliefs and discourses of the producers, and the wider power structures in American society.

The easily accessible medium of the comic book is the method of dispersal of these messages, which can be seen in this case as messages of both the pure American ideal discussed earlier, and the pro war message of those in power who were gearing to enter WWII.

This makes the comic a political vehicle publically perpetuating American political discourse. The boundaries of the real world are intersecting the boundaries of the fictional comic and are their dominant American ideology is displayed to consumers. Captain America is America, and therefore his actions eschew American ideology, and by consuming these comics the reader is both reading these discourses, and aligning themselves with it.

The political timing and content combined make this comic book Captain America 1 a clear piece of propaganda, but as with all propaganda and ideological promotion it stems from discourses of those in power in society, which then filters down to the methods of production, the media, usually controlled by those in power and thus are propagated by writers and editors of media products. In this case that means the writers of comic books, who must work with or be influenced by surrounding politics and ideology.

This delivery of political or national discourse through media production is a hegemonic device, through which those involved perpetuate dominant social and national notions, either consciously or unconsciously. What is interesting about the timing of Captain America 1 is that although it was released in , it was in fact produced before America had officially entered WW2. This goes a long way to explaining the cover showing Captain America battling Hitler.

To me the enemy was Hitler. In the actual image we can see the whole of the pledge played out in illustrated form. Again the shield becomes relevant here. While the German soldiers in the picture are all seen firing guns, the protagonist, despite throwing a punch, clasps only a shield.

He, and therefore America, is again fighting to defend something and not attacking something as the German soldiers are suggested to be doing. This would suggest that he must be defending the American way against something else, in this case Fascism, as denoted by the German soldiers, Hitler, and the swastikas on their uniforms. Herb Given his origins in the context of a comic that reflected the contemporary political landscape in s US policy, it is unsurprising to discover that Captain America remained a popular character and icon throughout the remainder of the century, especially during war time.

Here American Capitalism and ideology is in opposition to a Communist culture. Just as in the cover Cap carries only a Shield into battle, while communist troops open fire with guns. Much like the fascist enemies of USA and the allies were depicted in 41, the Communist forces are shown to be an Figure 2.

The national symbolic that Dittmer mentioned earlier in this research is present again. The swastikas are replaced here by the Soviet hammer and sickle, but again symbolic binaries are made between nation, with Cap being America and Communists much like the Germans in portrayed as the un-American other.

The symbolism and presence of un-American others highlights the dominant ideologies at play within the superhero comic. It is important to state that the Red Skull mantle has been donned by more than one character, but rather than this being a hindrance to research it instead solidifies the function of the symbol of the Red Skull as an opposition to Captain America and the national ideology that he represents.
